From rock and brine to battery
Lithium comes from two main sources: hard-rock minerals such as spodumene, and brines pumped from salt flats and similar deposits. Hard rock is crushed and concentrated into a mineral concentrate, which is then converted in a chemical plant into lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide. Brines are processed in evaporation ponds or by other methods into lithium chemicals. Battery makers use the chemicals to produce cathode materials.
Spodumene concentrate
Spodumene concentrate is a fine to granular mineral product. The key figure is lithium oxide content, written as Li2O, stated as a percentage by weight. Concentrate grades are often named by their approximate content, for example a product described as SC6 refers to a concentrate of around 6 percent Li2O. Lower-grade products exist and trade at different prices.
- Li2O content: the main quality figure and value driver.
- Iron oxide (Fe2O3): limited because iron is a contaminant for the chemical conversion and for the end product.
- Other impurities: silica, alumina, alkali elements and others, according to the buyer's plant.
- Moisture and size: affect weight, handling and the conversion process.
Lithium carbonate and hydroxide
These are chemicals specified by purity and by limits on many trace elements, with separate grades for technical use and for batteries. Battery-grade products need very high purity and tightly controlled trace metals and moisture. Buyers usually qualify a supplier by testing samples and auditing the plant before volume orders. Carbonate and hydroxide suit different battery chemistries, so they are separate markets.
How prices are set
There is no single exchange price that every deal follows. Spodumene contracts often follow a formula linked to published price assessments for lithium chemicals or concentrate, with a discount, a minimum or maximum price and a pricing period. Chemicals trade on spot and on longer-term contracts with formulas. Because prices have moved sharply in the past, ask how provisional and final prices work and what happens if the price moves between signing and shipment.
Provisional and final settlement
Concentrate is usually paid provisionally on estimated weight and grade and settled finally after sampling and analysis at loading, with an umpire laboratory for differences. The sampling method, the laboratories and the time limits for the final assay all belong in the contract, as with other concentrates.
Other battery minerals
Each material has its own standard, its own buyers and its own paperwork, so learn one at a time.
- Nickel: sold as refined metal or intermediate products, with a pricing link to exchange prices.
- Cobalt: refined metal, hydroxide or sulphate, with several markets and price assessments.
- Manganese: ore, alloy and high-purity sulphate for batteries.
- Graphite: natural flake and synthetic graphite, specified by carbon content, flake size and purity, with anode-grade requiring processing into spherical graphite.
Shipping and paperwork
Concentrate often ships in bulk or in containers, and chemicals in bags, drums or bulk bags in containers. Documents include the bill of lading, invoice, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis and weight certificates, and for chemicals a safety data sheet. Check export and import regulations for the specific product, as classification may differ for ores and chemicals.
Practical tips for newcomers
Tonport's catalogue lists spodumene, lithium carbonate and related products with indicative customs codes.
- Ask for recent assays from an independent laboratory, not only the seller's own.
- Ask which end user or conversion plant the seller supplies, and whether a reference can be given.
- Agree the umpire process before the first shipment.
- Start with a trial quantity if the buyer needs to qualify the material.
Sık sorulan sorular
- What does SC6 mean?
- It refers to spodumene concentrate with roughly 6 percent lithium oxide content. The exact grade and tolerance are in the contract.
- What is battery grade lithium carbonate?
- A high-purity grade with tight limits on trace impurities and moisture, suited to producing battery cathode materials. Buyers usually qualify it by testing samples.
- Why is iron limited in spodumene?
- Iron is a contaminant that complicates the chemical conversion and can harm the quality of the final lithium chemicals.
- Is there a single lithium price?
- No. Several published assessments exist for concentrate and chemicals, and contracts name the one they use and how it applies.
