Two points on the copper chain

Copper is mined as ore, concentrated at the mine into a powder called concentrate, smelted into an intermediate product and refined into cathode. Cathode is the form that exchanges and fabricators trade. Concentrate is what mines sell to smelters. The two are different products with different buyers, different specifications and different ways of pricing.

Copper cathode

Cathodes are flat sheets of refined copper, formed by electrolytic refining or electrowinning. They are very pure, and the common top grade has a minimum copper content of 99.99 percent in the standards used by major exchanges. Cathodes are sold to wire rod mills, brass mills and other fabricators who melt them into products.

  • Specification: a standard grade, such as a named exchange-registered brand or an equivalent national or international standard.
  • Physical form: sheets of a given size and weight, strapped in bundles.
  • Surface: free of visible contamination, with brand marks of the producer.
  • Packing: bundles on pallets, loaded in containers or breakbulk.

How cathode is priced

The usual formula is a reference price, for example an exchange settlement on a stated date or the average over a quotation period, plus a premium that reflects the market for physical metal at the delivery location, the grade, the brand and the delivery terms. Contracts name the pricing period, such as the month of shipment or a month after, and the currency. The reference is public, while the premium is the negotiated part.

Copper concentrate

Concentrate is a fine powder, typically containing a fraction of copper by weight, often in the region of 20 to 30 percent, together with iron, sulphur and other elements. The exact range depends on the mine. Smelters pay for the copper they can recover, and they set limits on elements that cause trouble in the process or in the final product.

Payable content

The smelter pays for a share of the copper contained, not all of it. Contracts apply a minimum deduction or a percentage so that the payable quantity reflects what can be recovered.

Treatment and refining charges

The smelter charges a fee per ton of concentrate for treatment and a fee per unit of copper for refining. They are known as TC and RC, and they are negotiated by the market and set in the contract or by a benchmark formula. Higher charges mean the miner receives less.

Penalty elements

Elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead, zinc, mercury and fluorine are limited. Above a stated level, the smelter may impose a penalty or reject the lot. Precious metals such as gold and silver in the concentrate may earn payment above stated thresholds.

Provisional and final settlement

Because content is known only after sampling and analysis, concentrate is paid in two steps. A provisional invoice is based on estimated weight and assays, and the final invoice follows the agreed final weights, moisture and assays, often with an umpire laboratory process if the two sides differ. The contract states the sampling method, the laboratories, the tolerance and the time limits. Read this part closely before signing.

Shipping and documents

Cathodes ship in containers or on breakbulk vessels and are weighed by count and weight at loading. Concentrate ships in bulk in vessels or in containers with liners, with moisture control to avoid liquefaction risk, a known hazard for fine wet cargoes. The master of the vessel will ask for moisture certificates and a declaration on the transportable moisture limit. Documents for both include the bill of lading, invoice, weight certificate and analysis certificate, plus origin documents.

Which one to buy or sell

Tonport has product pages for copper cathode and concentrate with codes and open listings, and the market page shows a delayed copper reference price.

  • Fabricators and mills buy cathode or scrap, because they melt and cast.
  • Smelters buy concentrate, because they convert it to metal.
  • A trader can buy concentrate from a mine and sell it to a smelter, earning a margin on the physical logistics and on the terms, rather than on the metal price.

Questions fréquentes

What does 99.99 percent copper cathode mean?
It means at least 99.99 percent of the weight is copper, the usual top grade for exchange-registered cathode. Check the standard that the contract names.
What are TC and RC?
Treatment charge and refining charge are fees the smelter deducts for processing concentrate and refining the copper. They are set by contract and reflect market conditions.
Why is concentrate paid in two steps?
Because its value depends on weight, moisture and assay results, which are known only after sampling and analysis. A provisional payment is adjusted by the final settlement.
Is the copper price on a screen the price of cathode I can buy?
It is a reference. A real cargo has a premium or discount for brand, location, timing and terms.
