Why trade scams exist
Physical commodity trade involves large values, parties in different countries and documents that few people can easily verify. Fraudsters know that many newcomers are eager for a first deal and that a busy deal chain makes everyone assume someone else did the checking. The patterns repeat, which is good news: once you know them, they are easy to recognise.
Pattern 1: the daisy chain
A daisy chain is a long line of intermediaries between the supposed seller and the supposed buyer, each one taking a slice and none of them with direct contact to either end. The same offer is passed from one to the next, often with a higher price at each step. The chain can look like a good opportunity, because each link repeats that the deal is real. In practice, the more links, the less likely that the product is genuine, and the less room there is for each link to earn anything.
- Ask who the actual owner or the actual end user is, and ask to speak to them or to see their documents.
- A genuine seller or buyer can be named. If the answer is that it is confidential until you sign, ask what you can verify first.
- If you cannot find out where the chain ends, treat it as unverified.
Pattern 2: recycled offers
The same offer, with the same photographs, the same quantity and the same product name, circulates for months from one sender to the next. It may have been real once, or it may never have been. Signs include a stock photo, a copied specification with another company's name removed, and a seller who cannot give a current stock location. Ask for current evidence with today's date and a way to verify it independently.
Pattern 3: fake proof of funds and proof of product
A buyer says they have funds and sends a bank letter. A seller says they have product and sends a tank statement or a certificate. Both documents are easy to forge or to produce for purposes other than the one claimed. Verify by contacting the bank or the terminal using contact details you found yourself, not the ones in the document. A genuine institution can confirm the existence of the account or the stock to the right person.
- Be careful with letters that use unusual wording about instruments that are not payments, such as offers to lease, rent or sell a bank guarantee.
- A bank officer's email address that does not match the bank's own domain is a warning.
- A document that cannot be confirmed by the issuer is not proof.
Pattern 4: fees first
The request arrives for a payment before anything else happens: a fee to open the deal, a charge for a document, a deposit for a bank instrument, a payment for a visit, a performance bond. The amount is small compared with the deal, and the promise is that the large money follows. The large money does not follow. Be suspicious of any deal in which you have to pay first and the other side has not shown anything verifiable.
Pattern 5: pressure and secrecy
- Urgency: the offer expires today, the vessel is waiting, another buyer is ready.
- Secrecy: you must not contact the producer or the end user directly.
- Moving the conversation to a private channel quickly and avoiding video calls.
- Requests to sign a non-circumvention or confidentiality document before any information is shared, used as a tool to stop you from checking.
- Prices far below or far above the market with no explanation.
Pattern 6: look-alike companies and documents
Fraudsters copy real company names with small changes, use similar email domains and reuse genuine registration documents. Check the domain age, the phone numbers and the address, and compare the registration number with the official register. A call to a number from the company's official site, not from the email, settles many doubts.
A short test before you go further
If any answer is no, pause. A real deal survives a few days of checking.
- Can I verify the company and the person independently?
- Is the product physically located where they say, and can an independent inspector confirm it?
- Is the payment route a recognised bank instrument that my bank understands?
- Am I being asked to pay or to share sensitive documents before I have verified anything?
- Does the price make sense compared with reference prices?
If you have been approached
Stop sending money or documents, keep the messages, and tell your bank if you have paid. Report the account on the platform where it appeared, so that others are warned. On Tonport you can report a listing or a member, and the Deal Room claims channel is a place to ask whether others have seen the same pattern.
الأسئلة الشائعة
- What is a daisy chain in commodity trading?
- A long series of intermediaries between the supposed seller and buyer, each adding a margin and none of whom can show the real owner or end user.
- Can a proof of funds letter be trusted?
- Not by itself. Verify with the bank using contact details you found independently, and prefer recognised instruments such as a letter of credit from a known bank.
- Is it normal to pay a fee before a deal starts?
- Be careful. Genuine services such as inspection or legal drafting are paid to identifiable providers for a defined service. A fee to the counterparty to start the deal is a warning sign.
- Does a verified badge remove the need to check?
- A badge shows that registration documents were reviewed. It is a helpful signal, and you should still check the other side for the specific deal.
